Feel free to drop in to our open house meetings every Second and Fourth Tuesdays at 7:30p (See Meetup.com calendar to confirm the schedule) to meet some folks and see what we've got going on. If you like what you see, and there's a project or class you're interested in, then start showing up to the project meetings or register for classes.

*Mentor route
** Request an existing member to be your mentor. A mentor is a member that will introduce you to all things Freeside: where things are, how things work, our policies and rules, and help answer your questions. The easiest way to get a mentor is to come to one of our public events and locate a member with similar interests.
** Submit your introduction to your mentor. The introduction is made up of your answers to a few questions that tells us about yourself, your projects, and interests. We then post your introduction to our member's mailing list, which helps connect you to more members. Include a few photos of yourself (with at least 1 taken at Freeside) and some of your past and current projects. Some of our members are better with faces than names, and everyone likes to see what you've been working on!

*Self nomination
** Attend at least 5 public Freeside events (including classes, open houses, build outs, or meetups) in a 6 month period.
** Submit the introduction mentioned above in the Mentor route, along with the list of the public event's you've attended to email address here for self nominations. Be sure to include the photos, including the selfie or action shot taken at Freeside.
** Your introduction will be sent to our member's mailing list for discussion by the current membership. Since this route doesn't include a mentor to guide your introduction and speak on your behalf, your intro has to speak for you, and you're relying on your submitted photos for recognition.

Approved: 2013-FEB-05
Amended: 2013-SEP-14

The Starving Hacker Program (SHP) allows an individual to pay a reduced membership rate at Freeside, if they meet certain qualifications. The base rate for an SHP member is determined by the Treasurer. This will typically be half the normal dues rate but can be more or less than that amount but always less than full membership amount.

To qualify for the Starving Hacker program (and its reduced rate) you must meet and provide documentation for one of the following criteria:
* A full time student at an accredited educational program
* Unemployed or retired
* Temporarily or permanently disabled
* Work full time in a civil service role (public school teacher, social worker, etc)

To continue to qualify for the Starving Hacker program you must:
* Make prepayments, or setup recurring payment and
* Participate in at least one build-out/clean-up day a quarter

In addition to these, to maintain qualification you must also meet one of the following requirements:
* Teach a class that adds the equivalent revenue of half the regular membership rate
* Contribute time or value to a project that adds the equivalent of half the regular membership rate
* Make at least one blog post per month, or otherwise add significant content to our online presence

Participation in the Starving Hacker program will be evaluated per quarter.

Any changes to the member's qualifying status must be reported to the Treasurer within 60 days of the change. Failure to report the change will result in the member's dues reverting to the standard rate for the period of time starting when the change occurred (in other words, you will pay back dues at the full membership rate.)

** Electrical
</pre>
Some deliverables absolutely require a licensed electrician. Given that, we aim to identify all deliverables that do require an electrician, as well as other deliverables that can better be addressed by an electrician, assuming that we engage one for a deliverable requiring a permit.

Installing power for the kiln (many Freesiders await the ability to use our fine kiln) requires 240V power, and hence a permit, and hence a licensed electrician. A number of other desired improvements would benefit from the installation of 240V power in convenient places.
Installing power more conveniently located in the non-metal area of the workshop would require 120V power, and woul require a permit, and hence an electrician.

Some deliverables might not require a permit or licensed electrician, such as connecting wired outlets to existing power in junction boxes.

We need to finalize our agenda for use when conferring with an electrician. Jud has contacted two. One has responded. However, these quotes will not address the agenda we will soon create, so these quotes will be used as references.
- 50A to kiln (plug to match kiln) Can run along the back side of the wall above the door openings, or ceiling
- At least 30A to air compressor (plug to match compressor) Can run along the back side of the wall above the door openings, or ceiling

***** 120V
- lights outside in the back need to be wired in. The two outer ones are new installs, the center one is old and may not work.
- add a switched circuit for lighting over the machine shop and auto bay. Switch should be located near the west door, switched junction boxes on the ceiling near the back of the bays (this will allow someone coming in from the back of the space to turn lights on once we have access control) Freeside can install appropriate lighting fixtures here once the wiring is there to support it.
- add more 120 to the East wall and South wall of the shop (where the miter saw is) from one of the main junction boxes for additional power tool usage. 1 4 gang plug centrally located on the South wall, one 2 gang plug on the East wall every X (10?) feet all the way to the back of the space*, including the auto bay. From this Freeside will take care of running the floor channels as needed based upon the shop layout. *If it is easier to run 120 to the East wall in the auto bay from the West wall while running the for the compressor and kiln, that works too.

::::* Run electrical to Form1 room (Review existing circuits available above the clean room, may be possible to move this to work we can do based upon existing quad that was in that room's ceiling)
::::* install lights in hallway (need to look to see if there is an existing junction box usable in the attic or hallway, in which case we might be able to do this ourselves)
::::* Install dropped quads in workshop (was: 120v cables to quads in workshop)
::::* 220v to front left corner of auto bay (Duplicate of Kiln item above)
::::* 220v to large air compressor
::::* 220v to welding table
::::* Split metal shop\auto bay lights to their own switch that can be turned on/off from there (we could do this, but well worth having electrician do it while they're working on the 220v in this area)

:::* Unknown Items
::::* hole in outlet above projector (What does this mean? There's a hole in the outlet? Please provide more details.)

A twice monthly event where we open our doors and welcome the general public into the mysterious confines of Freeside Atlanta. This is generally intended as a social gathering, but members frequently show up to hack on their projects as well. We welcome guests and visitors to work on something if you wish, just be sure you glance over our policies. Large shop tools and tools that require special training are generally shut down during open houses due to the risks involved by having large crowds wandering through the space on tours and unescorted.

The Open House generally involves giving tours, answering questions about the space, and introducing members that share common interests with you. As a visitor, you are encouraged to wander around and explore all the things Freeside has to offer, as well as the things you could potentially offer our community.

We encourage you to come out, and be sure to:

What is a Hackerspace?
One way to explain a hackerspace is to say it is a collaborative work environment. However, hackerspaces are also extremely varied spaces in terms of organization, mission, culture, scope, and size. There are small workshops where a few good friends get together to drink homebrew beer and hack on custom-designed 3D printers. There are sprawling spaces hundreds-strong, a small village barter economy - with ideas and imagination as currency.

One aspect that is almost completely unique to hackerspaces is environment hacking: new furniture, storage space, workstations, lighting, and rooms. Most people are conditioned by having to grow up, learn, live and work in environments that have been created for them from the top down. Freeside completely inverts this social construct, and instead empowers its members to create their own environment, grassroots style.

It's interesting to note that many libraries are building hackerspaces. As books (and knowledge) ever march digital, what function and role does a library play in society? The library, as the institution we know today, is sure to vanish. The Hackerspace is the sole heir to its the social responsibility and function, to the ongoing development of skills, and as a curator and index of knowledge.

It's a place for tinkerers and hobbyists to talk shop and compare notes. It's an unbounded blank canvas for creation, where ideas can be put to the test, things set on fire, and the stuff of legends cast in the forge of blood, sweat, and tears. Or just tablespace to work on your soldering skills. It's really up to you, as a participant, to create and define what the space ultimately becomes.

Will it be a mere reflection of yourself? A composite, stained-glass mural of its member ids and egos? Or does it emerge into its own strange and magnificent creature?
What is Freeside, exactly?
Freeside is a 501(c)3 non-profit hackerspace and community. It's exclusively run by its members and volunteers. Our mission is to promote personal development, continuing education, and scientific research.

How do I get to Freeside?
675 Metropolitan Parkway<br>
Suite 6066<br>
Atlanta, GA 30310

We've put together detailed directions, as well as video.

What is the gate code?
Use our handy web form: Gate Code

Where should I park my car so it doesn't get towed?
Park in the green areas shown below (with instructions by clicking on each area). You may park in the yellow area near our front entrance, as long as you are not blocking any garage doors and respect an individual unit's "No Parking" signs. Do not park in the red areas, or your vehicle will be at risk of getting towed.

Can I show up to visit the space at any time to check it out?
Likely not, especially if you were not expected, and/or nobody knows who you are. Freeside is a pretty chill environment, but a lot of members come to work on projects with minimal interruptions. Some members might be uncomfortable to allow strangers into Freeside, or are unable or unwilling to bear the responsibility of hosting a guest.

Also, if you arrive at our space and call our VOIP/Voicemail number, you may be disappointed to learn that the number is not currently connected to any physical telephone at the space, and that we rarely check the messages.

Instead, before stopping by randomly, join our public mailing list and ask ahead to make arrangements to visit.

What kind of services do you offer?
Freeside is not a for-profit organization, so we do not have products or services for sale. Our customer support is terrible, anyway.

Freeside does not provide on-demanding 3D printing, materials or machine time for construction of prototypes, or consulting for patent applications, engineering, or software. We will gladly refer you to businesses that specialize in these matters.

Freeside does not rent storage space or work space to individuals.

What are your hours?
Right now, we don't keep regular hours, but somebody is usually around during the day. Join our public mailing list and ask ahead to make arrangements to visit - our members are more than willing to show off the space and its projects!

Freeside is open 24/7 to members.

What is the best time to stop by and see it for myself?
We have an open house every Second and Fourth Tuesday night around 7p or thereabouts. At our open house, you're welcome to just browse around and see what members are working on. You're free to ask to join the fun! The open house has more of a social feel, but feel free to break away if you find something interesting to work on.

If enough people gather in a cluster, the cluster may be led around.

We also have events and classes (just about) all the time. Check out and join our Meetup group for the schedule and to RSVP.

How can I get more involved?
Freeside is a member-supported nonprofit organization. We're always looking for active new members, donors, and supporters. There are a ton of ways to get started. One way is to bring us something from our Wishlist! Probably the best way is to introduce yourself at the Tuesday Open House listed above.

The only thing that is required for membership is enthusiasm. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the space and all of the projects going on your first time there, but one of our goals is education and we'll teach you whatever you'd like to know. Don't wait for a class on it either - find a subject matter expert (SME) in the area that your interested in and they'll help you get started.

If we don't have a class/event/project/area that you'd like to see, just rally people to get it. If you can keep people excited about something, they'll help you build whatever you're looking for. The more that our members do this, the stronger Freeside becomes and the more resources you'll have at your disposal.

How much are dues?
Our current regular membership rate is $80/mo, which comes with a bunch of benefits. A discount membership rate is $40/mo, and is available to those who qualify (including students) through the Starving Hacker Program.

Other discounts are available, just ask our [mailto:treasurer@freesideatlanta.org Treasurer].

Do you offer day passes or short-term membership?
We do not offer day passes or short-term membership.

The issue with short-term membership is that our community is kept strong by creating a high trust environment. Over time, people that have weak ties to our community and little investment in the continued success of the space may not take care of the basics, like keeping the space clean and putting away tools after working on a project.

If a person is not interested in making a moderate commitment to Freeside membership, then we encourage them to continue to attend our open houses, other public events, or to get involved in one of our community projects, all free of charge.

Are my donations tax-deductible?
You may elect to have a receipt issued for your donation, to claim as tax-deductible. See the donations page for more information about what we accept and how we assess value.

Our Wishlist is a good place to see what we need!

Is Freeside an independent 501(c)3 charity organization?
Yes! Retroactive to MAY-2012, we have approval as an independent 501(c)3 charity organization. Contact the Treasurer for more information or if you have any questions.

How do I get less email from the mailing lists?
We use Google Groups to manage our mailing lists, so you can go to the Google Groups page and manage your email settings there, for the groups you are a part of. If you select the Abridged option then you'll get a daily email. The Digest option sends you an email every 25 emails to the list.

Why 'Freeside'?

We have an open house every other week, traditionally on Tuesday night around 7p or thereabouts. At our open house, you're welcome to just browse around and see what members are working on. You're free to ask to join the fun! The open house has more of a social feel, but feel free to break away if you find something interesting to work on.

If enough people gather in a cluster, the cluster may be led around.

Saturdays are also a good bet - it's an unofficial work day for our officers to improve Freeside and its infrastructure.

{{quote|

Freeside offers many different classes and workshops. Some are recurring, informal meet-ups and others are more formal lectures or hands-on activities.

We try to focus on classes that can teach basic skills and make some of the tools and technology in the space more approachable. We want to give people the info they need to get started so that they can develop using the tools and knowledge-base available in our space.

Freeside members are eligible to receive a 20% discount from the posted cost of the class. All classes are open to non-members, and non-members may teach a class as long as they partner with a member to open up the space for them.

All of our classes are organized through our Meetup page, with associated groups on Facebook.

Teaching at Freeside
Our classes are taught by volunteers, so they are fairly inexpensive.

Classes are typically taught at a rate of around $5-$20 per hour. If materials are used, then an additional materials fee is included. If a materials fee is charged, the students must either use it in hands-on class work (ex. welding or mold-making) or leave the class with something to take with them (ex. 3D print or laser cut part)

Teachers receive a full 50% of the class revenue. The other 50% goes to Freeside, which covers fees for taking payments, running equipment, advertising the class, offering member discounts, and running the shop. Though we typically don't do free classes, some teachers opt to donate their 50% back to the space. Free workshops are called Events and are covered under a different section.

Would you like to teach a class, but you're not sure what? Here are some Class Ideas to give you an idea of what we've heard people request classes on.

How to register as a Teacher at Freeside
Teaching at Freeside is a great way to share your skills with the community, get more people involved, and make a real, positive impact on the space.

To register as a Teacher, first fill out the Teacher Registration Form and we'll get with you to set you up as a teacher.

Next, you can register to teach a class by filling out the Class Registration Form and we'll get with you to look over the lesson plan, discuss the details of the class relevant to scheduling and promotion, make any necessary adjustments, and then launch the class on Meetup and Facebook.

Why Classes are important to Freeside
Freeside's mission is to provide a place for education and research in the Atlanta community. It's important to make our space and community more approachable to newcomers. Bringing them in with classes and giving them the tools they need to be successful in our space is key to growing and changing with new members and participants.

To achieve these goals, our class structure has to take everyone's needs into consideration. We've organized classes this way because we feel it is the most best way for everyone involved:

Good for students
*Basic information and a network of help
*Reasonable pricing ($5-$20 per hour of instruction recommended + materials fees if applicable)
*Reliable and organized instruction
Good for teachers
*50% take of all class income (fees are deducted from Freeside’s portion)
*Teachers benefit from Freeside’s network of interested students
*Free advertising and promotion
*Administration of class is taken care of
*Space and materials are provided (classroom, projector, equipment, etc...)
Good for Freeside
*More support for more materials, space, resources
*Better skills = cooler projects for members
Good for Freeside Members
*Freeside members get a 20% refund on class fees (taken from Freeside’s portion)
*More diverse classes bring more diverse people to Freeside

Open to non-members
If you are interested in attending a class and are not a member, either email the group ([mailto:freesideatlanta@googlegroups.com freesideatlanta@googlegroups.com]) or contact the member contact for the particular class you're interested in. We can ensure that you get the Gate Code for the Metropolitan complex.

Freeside is always looking for volunteers! If you're interested in speaking or giving a talk at Freeside, please fill out or application form. We'll contact you to help you schedule and promote your class, lecture, or workshop.

Placeholder:
Short Term Project Storage is for storing active projects that exceed your Member Storage allocation. This space is limited and available on a first-come, first-served basis. If you are not actively working on the project (don't plan on being back in a few weeks), you should make plans to take it with you when you leave, or fit it into your member storage.

Projects must be labelled with a Short Term Project Storage Pass
Projects should be contained in a box, or placed on a tray as much as possible to help keep your project pieces together, and minimize loss and damage if they must be moved.

Abandoned or idle projects may be moved to make room. Properly labeling and containing your project will help insure that if it is moved, you'll know where it went.

Goal
To build a $500 educational project to display and demo at the upcoming EDExpo (late February 2015)

Plan
Build a portable, RaspberryPi based Lightboard for recording lessons/lectures/demos. A lightboard allows the instructor to write on a whiteboard in front of them while facing the camera. See: Northwestern Lightboard for examples

[Youtube|https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZsAPPUVK-DY&list=PLqATPiC_Bcl-t8vrzZlnGi3HTurs9Yuf3]

Status
The basic lightboard is assembled and working.

The RaspberryPi and camera is set up to automatically boot into camera preview mode with the image flipped horizontally.

Project Description
A lightboard allows an instructor to record educational material to be presented online (either streaming live or after additional post processing and editing) in a natural manner. Notes and diagrams are easily written directly on the transparent board between the presenter and the camera, without the need for the presenter to turn their back to the virtual students (as in a traditional classroom setting with a whiteboard behind the presenter).

The presenter writes and draws naturally in their own handwriting as the camera handles flipping the image horizontally before the student views it. The real-time preview screen aids in the presentation. It is like watching oneself in a mirror instead of a traditional studio monitor that is inverted left to right. Additionally the text drawn on the lightboard is seen immediately in the same orientation as it will be viewed by the students.

The edge lighting of the transparent dry erase board creates an effect of bright, clear letters easily viewable that appear in midair in front of the presenter and the black background. The dark solid background also allows for easy insertion of images using post production video editing software, or through a hardware video mixing board.

Project Straylight is built using commonly available aluminum extrusion sections holding a sheet of ¼” acrylic, RGB LEDs for edge lighting, and a RaspberryPi single board Linux based PC with an inexpensive HD camera. The backdrop is heavy black canvas fabric on a PVC frame. In a studio environment, the back wall could be painted a matte black finish instead.

Budget
RaspberryPi Recording
* RaspberryPi B: $35
* RaspberryPi Camera: $30
* Monitor with HDMI input: $100
* Powered USB Hub: $10
* USB sound card for recording: $10
* Microphone: $15
* HDMI and misc cables: $20
* RaspberryPi Mount: $0 (3D printed)
* VESA Mount to monitor: $0 (Laser cut from scrap acrylic)
* Software: $0 (all open source)

Lightboard
* 3x6" .220" thick Acrylic: $100
* 25mm extruded aluminum frame: $80
* LED lighting strip and power supply: $25
* Neon EXPO dry erase markers: $15
* Black canvas for backdrop (2.75 yards): $10
* PVC for backdrop stand: $15 (estimate as this was scrap)
* Baskets for markers: $5
* Misc screws and brackets: $25

Total: $495

Todo/Version 2
Software
* Video mixer to be able to overlay images into the background in real time
* Experiment with the RaspberryPi cameras settings for white balance, image stabilization, etc for optimal recording
* Script that automatically starts and stops recording of video and audio on a trigger
* Script to mix the audio and video into a single file for easier post-production
* Auto-mounting of a USB thumb drive at boot time and set this as the default location for recordings, or post-mixing drops to eliminate users from needed access to the RaspberryPi

Hardware
* Give the presenter a remote control to start and stop recording from behind the board. Keyboard or mouse would be fine.
* Redesign the floor mounts of the board to be sturdier and to allow for a heavier board
* Use tempered glass instead of acrylic for better long term durability (current budget wouldn't allow for this at approximately twice the cost, plus twice the weight)
* Edge light with solid white LED strip instead of RGB strip (RGD was available so was used although not necessary)
* Add a second RaspberryPi/monitor/45degree piece of acrylic in front of the camera for a teleprompter
* On-air light: Add a red LED to the VESA mount, hooked into a GPIO on the RaspberryPi, that can be turned on and off via script. This will edge light the mount with a red glow when the Pi is recording.
* Add WiFi and set up Network Time Protocol (NTP) or add a real time clock (RTC) to the Pi so the time stamping of files is accurate.
* If Lightboard is set up in a semi-permanent location (The podcast studio?) set up better ambient lighting for optimal recording

The RaspberryPi and camera is set up to automatically boot into camera preview mode with the image flipped horizontally.

Needs
the glass/acrylic
We can get 3x6' 6mm/.25" acrylic for $110 locally. Need to price a piece of similar sized tempered glass (with at least one top and one side edge polished so it can be edge lit) . Not married to the size, but approximately this ratio and probably not smaller than 3x5' or larger than 4x8'. It would be great to find a readily available piece, either something kept stocked or a frameless shower door that wouldn't break the budget. 6mm or .220. If larger than 6mm we'll have to mill out the slot in the aluminum (up to maybe 10 or 11 mm) to fit it. More work and heavier.

Pros/Cons
Acrylic will be lighter (and maybe cheaper), but prone to scratching and harder to clean. Risk that some markers might have chemicals that can etch the surface. Glass is heavier, some greater risk of breaking in transport, but won't flex when being written on or scratch.

backdrop and frame
Some sort of black fabric that can be hung behind the subject with low reflection.

A frame of some sort to set this up on.

Height and width TBD based upon the glass size

HDMI or composite monitor or TV
Something the subject can see themselves on. Needs HDMI or composite input so it can be driven from the RasPi
Something VESA mountable a big plus
HDMI to DVI/VGA adapter might work too with some existing surplus screens we have
# If your project is going to create dust, try to control it (shop vac, dust collector for wood tools only, physical barriers to limit spreading to a smaller area, do work in the shop, not the front where possible). Sweep up the work surfaces, tools, and floor around you when you’re done.
# Welding masks are required for anyone using or observing a welder. You are also required to place a UV blocking curtain or solid objects between welding and other shop users to protect them from UV exposure. Let others present know you are welding and inform them how to safely avoid dangerous exposure.
# Spray painting (and other materials) must be done outside to avoid overspray damaging tools and equipment and to minimize health and flammability issues. (*If we want to be able to paint inside, we need an area dedicated to this, and a paint spray fan/filter system constructed).
# The equipment and power tools are not storage locations, workbenches, ladders, chairs, etc. Do not place drinks, food, works in progress, excess materials, etc on any piece of equipment. Do not use equipment to support projects being painted, sanded, or for any other task unrelated to that tool.
# Read manuals, signs, and wiki pages for tool and machine specific rules.
# The shop is for use by Freeside members. Guests may use the shop only under the direct supervision of a member, who is responsible for ensuring that all safety rules are observed.
# Tools and equipment can not be removed from Freeside without the prior approval of an Officer or Director.
# Do not hack Freeside infrastructure, or any tool or equipment without prior approval.
# Respect the space and its resources.
# Respect your fellow members, their projects and property.

AUGuru: /* backdrop and frame */

Basics
We have a $500 Budget (funded!) to build an educational project to display and demo at the upcoming EDExpo (late February)

Plan
Build a portable, RaspberryPi based Lightboard for recording lessons/lectures/demos. A lightboard allows the instructor to write on a whiteboard in front of them while facing the camera. See: Northwestern Lightboard for examples

Status
Randy has RasPis, a Wolfson Audio board (use or not for audio input?), RasPi camera, a ton of 25mm black anodized aluminum extrusion.

Steven is in charge of the LED edge lighting. We'll need to do some back and side lighting of the subject too.

DMM is looking at an open stack for video switching

We'll need lots of fab help, and likely some programming and integration help on the RasPi side

Needs
the glass/acrylic
