We're going to be throwing a CryptoParty every second Thursday from 7-11pm.
We have detailed directions if you're unfamiliar with the space.
It's free! Just bring your laptop or other devices.

You don't have to sign up to come along - but if you do, it helps us prepare. Pseudonymous sign-ups are fine!

Drop in for a few minutes to ask a question or stay all evening and chat about privacy, security, and the interwebz.

What is a CryptoParty?
It's a lot of things in a lot of places. For most, it's a practical workshop for anyone interested in keeping their digital lives private.

Bring your laptops, netbooks, tablets and phones - we'll help you learn how to secure them and your communications:

* full disk encryption for your computers and memory sticks;

* encrypted email, text messages, IM on all your devices;

* anonymous browsing and tracker-avoidance;

* censorship circumvention;

* password generation, databases and management;

* keysigning / extending the web-of-trust.

If you have knowledge and skills to contribute in these or related areas please come along and share them with us!

Plus:

* ad-hoc discussion of the laws that govern who can access your stuff and when; and, at some point in the evening,

* our regular round-up and discussion of some cryptography basics and the latest digital-rights news, opinions, and happenings.

Have more questions? Check out cryptoparty.org. And remember to party like it's 1984!
(tin foil hats not included)

Code Examples
The demonstration where I pulled my own session keys to put them into the browser had a few commands associated with it. Here they are:
This place has too much going on and I can not cover it all in detail. It’s worth mentioning there is also a 3D Printing area containing 3 working printers that are ready to print out your next project. There is a dedicated room for member project/part storage. I’m positive this helps keep the rest of the common areas free of junk. If you are into Ham Radio or making podcasts, there’s a small room set up for that. While I was there some members were setting up a Media Lab and Bio Lab. From my perspective the members I met were active and engaged in the ‘space. The group has their stuff together, for sure. If you are ever in the area I recommend stopping by.
And everything is [possible], as long as you’re willing to do it yourself. Each new project is an experiment. The leadership’s goal is to empower members and to give them the tools to succeed while still allowing failure.
...
Even the substructure of the leadership is its own experiment. As Freeside’s membership grows, different responsibilities are delegated to officers and teams. It’s a strategy aimed at distributing power to prevent a handful of individuals from having too much control while retaining a sense of hierarchy and responsibility.
Please contact the Treasurer for more details, and to obtain a receipt.
Anyone can contribute time and energy towards Freeside and its projects, but such contributions cannot be claimed as donations for tax purposes.
Equipment, Materials, and Goods
The next best way to help us out is by helping us procure items on our Wishlist, especially if you're not sure what to get us.

Certain equipment or materials are never accepted as donations in any circumstances, such that they may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive. Some restricted items are listed below.

In general and notwithstanding forbidden materials, small value donations (under $250) may be donated with simple notification to the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org Safety and Risk] (SR) team, and claims and issuance of a receipt are at the sole discretion of the donor.

Donors with large value donations (over $250) must contact the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team] for approval. A receipt will be issued to the donor. If the donor wishes to remain anonymous, the donation record will be changed to make the donor anonymous, after issuance of the receipt.

If a receipt is issued for the donor, the fair market value shall be the average of a search for a minimum of three similar items, and the search shall be kept on record and noted on the receipt issued. For most donations, this method or similar valuation should suffice. For larger value donations (over $1000) and where it may be difficult to locate comparables, a signed affidavit of an appraiser must be presented in lieu of fair market value search, and be kept on record.

Separately, the donation of large equipment or materials (in terms of dimensions, volume) where placement is a concern and may interfere with Freeside operations or projects requires the pre-approval of the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team].

Certain equipment or materials must always be pre-approved by the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team], such that these items may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive.

If a member drops off or facilitates a visitor to drop off unapproved equipment or materials, the member shall be tasked with its removal from the space, and may be subject to removal costs or fines at the discretion of the SR team.

Restricted Items
Forbidden Items
* Stand-alone CRT displays are strictly forbidden, such as TVs and non-LCD computer monitors.
* Animal carcasses are strictly forbidden, even if hidden in sealed buckets. Professionally rendered taxidermy or taxiderpy, treated hides, antlers, bones, and other non-decomposing by-products are exempt from this restriction.

Approval Required
While you may be allowed to bring some of these items to Freeside, approval is required to donate to, or leave the following at Freeside:

* Gasoline
* Furniture
* Paint and Chemicals
* Propane and other pressurized tanks and bottles
* Batteries larger than D cells
* Medical equipment
* Food and alcohol

Emptyset: /* What is Freeside, exactly? */

What is a Hackerspace?
One way to explain a hackerspace is to say it is a collaborative work environment. However, hackerspaces are also extremely varied spaces in terms of organization, mission, culture, scope, and size. There are small workshops where a few good friends get together to drink homebrew beer and hack on custom-designed 3D printers. There are sprawling spaces hundreds-strong, a small village barter economy - with ideas and imagination as currency.

One aspect that is almost completely unique to hackerspaces is environment hacking: new furniture, storage space, workstations, lighting, and rooms. Most people are conditioned by having to grow up, learn, live and work in environments that have been created for them from the top down. Freeside completely inverts this social construct, and instead empowers its members to create their own environment, grassroots style.

It's interesting to note that many libraries are building hackerspaces. As books (and knowledge) ever march digital, what function and role does a library play in society? The library, as the institution we know today, is sure to vanish. The Hackerspace is the sole heir to its the social responsibility and function, to the ongoing development of skills, and as a curator and index of knowledge.

It's a place for tinkerers and hobbyists to talk shop and compare notes. It's an unbounded blank canvas for creation, where ideas can be put to the test, things set on fire, and the stuff of legends cast in the forge of blood, sweat, and tears. Or just tablespace to work on your soldering skills. It's really up to you, as a participant, to create and define what the space ultimately becomes.

Will it be a mere reflection of yourself? A composite, stained-glass mural of its member ids and egos? Or does it emerge into its own strange and magnificent creature?

The Hackerspace Manifesto embodies Freeside values.

These sites give a great introduction to hackerspaces and the growing maker movement:

Makerspace members both create and contribute to community projects. Project may involve as few as a couple of participants at a local makerspace, to many thousands of contributors across the internet. Some examples of projects that inspire makerspaces include:
What is Freeside, exactly?
Freeside is a 501(c)3 non-profit hackerspace and community. It's exclusively run by its members and volunteers. Our mission is to promote personal development, continuing education, and scientific research.

We've put together detailed directions, as well as video.

Park in the green areas shown below (with instructions by clicking on each area). You may park in the yellow area near our front entrance, as long as you are not blocking any garage doors and respect an individual unit's "No Parking" signs. Do not park in the red areas, or your vehicle will be at risk of getting towed.

Can I show up to visit the space at any time to check it out?
Likely not, especially if you were not expected, and/or nobody knows who you are. Freeside is a pretty chill environment, but a lot of members come to work on projects with minimal interruptions. Some members might be uncomfortable to allow strangers into Freeside, or are unable or unwilling to bear the responsibility of hosting a guest.

Also, if you arrive at our space and call our VOIP/Voicemail number, you may be disappointed to learn that the number is not currently connected to any physical telephone at the space, and that we rarely check the messages.

Instead, before stopping by randomly, join our public mailing list and ask ahead to make arrangements to visit.

What kind of services do you offer?
Freeside is not a for-profit organization, so we do not have products or services for sale. Our customer support is terrible, anyway.

Freeside does not provide on-demanding 3D printing, materials or machine time for construction of prototypes, or consulting for patent applications, engineering, or software. We will gladly refer you to businesses that specialize in these matters.

Freeside does not rent storage space or work space to individuals.

What are your hours?
Right now, we don't keep regular hours, but somebody is usually around during the day. Join our public mailing list and ask ahead to make arrangements to visit - our members are more than willing to show off the space and its projects!

Freeside is open 24/7 to members.

What is the best time to stop by and see it for myself?
We have an open house every other week, traditionally on Tuesday night around 7p or thereabouts. At our open house, you're welcome to just browse around and see what members are working on. You're free to ask to join the fun! The open house has more of a social feel, but feel free to break away if you find something interesting to work on.

If enough people gather in a cluster, the cluster may be led around.

Saturdays are also a good bet - it's an unofficial work day for our officers to improve Freeside and its infrastructure.

We also have events and classes (just about) all the time. Check out and join our Meetup group for the schedule and to RSVP.

How can I get more involved?
Freeside is a member-supported nonprofit organization. We're always looking for active new members, donors, and supporters. There are a ton of ways to get started. One way is to bring us something from our Wishlist! Probably the best way is to introduce yourself at the Tuesday Open House listed above.

The only thing that is required for membership is enthusiasm. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the space and all of the projects going on your first time there, but one of our goals is education and we'll teach you whatever you'd like to know. Don't wait for a class on it either - find a subject matter expert (SME) in the area that your interested in and they'll help you get started.

If we don't have a class/event/project/area that you'd like to see, just rally people to get it. If you can keep people excited about something, they'll help you build whatever you're looking for. The more that our members do this, the stronger Freeside becomes and the more resources you'll have at your disposal.

How much are dues?
Our current regular membership rate is $80/mo, which comes with a bunch of benefits. A discount membership rate is $40/mo, and is available to those who qualify (including students) through the Starving Hacker Program.

Other discounts are available, just ask our [mailto:treasurer@freesideatlanta.org Treasurer].

Do you offer day passes or short-term membership?
We do not offer day passes or short-term membership.

The issue with short-term membership is that our community is kept strong by creating a high trust environment. Over time, people that have weak ties to our community and little investment in the continued success of the space may not take care of the basics, like keeping the space clean and putting away tools after working on a project.

If a person is not interested in making a moderate commitment to Freeside membership, then we encourage them to continue to attend our open houses, other public events, or to get involved in one of our community projects, all free of charge.

Are my donations tax-deductible?
You may elect to have a receipt issued for your donation, to claim as tax-deductible. See the donations page for more information about what we accept and how we assess value.

Our Wishlist is a good place to see what we need!

Is Freeside an independent 501(c)3 charity organization?
Yes! Retroactive to MAY-2012, we have approval as an independent 501(c)3 charity organization. Contact the Treasurer for more information or if you have any questions.

How do I get less email from the mailing lists?
We use Google Groups to manage our mailing lists, so you can go to the Google Groups page and manage your email settings there, for the groups you are a part of. If you select the Abridged option then you'll get a daily email. The Digest option sends you an email every 25 emails to the list.

Why 'Freeside'?
The JAM is a machine that distributes art. This project was fully funded by the Alchemy community. We are on track to collect somewhere between 200-300 pieces of art to distribute, including works by Catlanta and Evereman.

The JAM explores two of the 10 core Burning Man principles: Decommodification and Gifting. We express Gifting by distributing art through the machine. Gifting trees are a familiar sight at Burns, but suffer from accumulating trash or trinkets. By gifting art (a gift in itself) we create a sort of on-demand gifting tree. We express Decommodification by not allowing the JAM to accept money. Instead, art is distributed by the machine on a timer. The machine lights up, and you push a button to receive art.

* full disk encryption for your computers and memory sticks;

* encrypted email, text messages, IM on all your devices;

* anonymous browsing and tracker-avoidance;

* censorship circumvention;

* password generation, databases and management;

* keysigning / extending the web-of-trust.

Freeside is a non-profit hackerspace and community, pending independent 501c3 status. It's exclusively run its members and volunteers. Our mission is to promote personal development, continuing education, and scientific research.

How do I get to Freeside?
675 Metropolitan Parkway<br>
Suite 6066<br>
Atlanta, GA 30310

We've put together detailed directions, as well as video.

What is the gate code?
Where should I park my car so it doesn't get towed?

Freeside is not a for-profit business, so we do not have products or services for sale.

Is Freeside an independent 501(c)3 charity organization?
Yes! Retroactive to MAY-2012, we have approval as an independent 501(c)3 charity organization. Contact the Treasurer for more information or if you have any questions.

How do I get less email from the mailing lists?
We use Google Groups to manage our mailing lists, so you can go to the Google Groups page and manage your email settings there, for the groups you are a part of. If you select the Abridged option then you'll get a daily email. The Digest option sends you an email every 25 emails to the list.

<p>Program a map to display frequency of data exchange, every thousand megabytes a single pixel on a very large screen. Manhattan and Atlanta burn solid white. Then they start to pulse, the rate of traffic threatening to overload your simulation. Your map is about to go nova. Cool it down. Up your scale. Each pixel a million megabytes. At a hundred million megabytes per second, you begin to make out certain blocks in midtown Manhattan, outlines of hundred-year-old industrial parks ringing the old core of Atlanta...</p>

In general and notwithstanding forbidden materials, small value donations (under $250) may be donated with simple notification to the [mailto:sr-committee@freesideatlanta.org Safety and Risk] (SR) team, and claims and issuance of a receipt are at the sole discretion of the donor.

Donors with large value donations (over $250) must contact the [mailto:sr-committee@freesideatlanta.org SR team] for approval.

Separately, the donation of large equipment or materials (in terms of dimensions, volume) where placement is a concern and may interfere with Freeside operations or projects requires the pre-approval of the [mailto:sr-committee@freesideatlanta.org SR team].

Certain equipment or materials must always be pre-approved by the [mailto:sr-committee@freesideatlanta.org SR team], such that these items may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive.

If a member drops off or facilitates a visitor to drop off unapproved equipment or materials, the member shall be tasked with its removal from the space, and may be subject to removal costs or fines at the discretion of the SR team.

“What The Domain learned from the experience of this officer is that the “Old Empire” has been using Earth as a “prison planet” for a very long time — exactly how long is unknown — perhaps millions of years.”

“…the very unusual combination of “inmates” on Earth – criminals, perverts, artists, revolutionaries and geniuses – is the cause of a very restive and tumultuous environment. The purpose of the prison planet is to keep IS-BEs on Earth, forever. Promoting ignorance, superstition, and war between IS-BEs helps to keep the prison population crippled and trapped behind “the wall” of electronic force screens.”

“The intervention of The Domain Force on Earth has not been entirely successful due to the secret mind-control operation of the “Old Empire” that still continues to operate.”

“Most people will not believe any of it, I’m sure. It seems too incredible. No “reasonable” person would ever believe a word of it. However, it only seems “incredible” to an IS-BE whose memory has been erased and replaced with false information inside the electronically controlled illusion of a prison planet. We must not allow the apparent incredibility of our situation to prevent us from confronting the reality of it.

Frankly, “reasons” have nothing to do with reality. There are no reasons. Things are what they are. If we don’t face the facts of our situation, we’re going to stay under the thumb of the “Old Empire” forever! The biggest weapon the “Old Empire” has left now is our ignorance of what they are doing to all the IS-BEs on Earth. Disbelief and secrecy are the most effective weapons they have! ”
