Even the term Tinker used to refer to someone who was capable of repairing worn cookware and other household odds and ends. Used, or cast off things often take on a second or third life in ways they weren't originally intended for, and Freeside has such things in spades.

Ironleg: /* Can I show up to visit the space at any time to check it out? */

What is a Hackerspace?
One way to explain a hackerspace is to say it is a collaborative work environment. However, hackerspaces are also extremely varied spaces in terms of organization, mission, culture, scope, and size. There are small workshops where a few good friends get together to drink homebrew beer and hack on custom-designed 3D printers. There are sprawling spaces hundreds-strong, a small village barter economy - with ideas and imagination as currency.

One aspect that is almost completely unique to hackerspaces is environment hacking: new furniture, storage space, workstations, lighting, and rooms. Most people are conditioned by having to grow up, learn, live and work in environments that have been created for them from the top down. Freeside completely inverts this social construct, and instead empowers its members to create their own environment, grassroots style.

It's interesting to note that many libraries are building hackerspaces. As books (and knowledge) ever march digital, what function and role does a library play in society? The library, as the institution we know today, is sure to vanish. The Hackerspace is the sole heir to its the social responsibility and function, to the ongoing development of skills, and as a curator and index of knowledge.

It's a place for tinkerers and hobbyists to talk shop and compare notes. It's an unbounded blank canvas for creation, where ideas can be put to the test, things set on fire, and the stuff of legends cast in the forge of blood, sweat, and tears. Or just tablespace to work on your soldering skills. It's really up to you, as a participant, to create and define what the space ultimately becomes.

Will it be a mere reflection of yourself? A composite, stained-glass mural of its member ids and egos? Or does it emerge into its own strange and magnificent creature?

The Hackerspace Manifesto embodies Freeside values.
You may park in the yellow area near our front entrance, as long as you are not blocking any garage doors and respect an individual unit's "No Parking" signs. -->

Can I show up to visit the space at any time to check it out?
Likely not, especially if you were not expected, and/or nobody knows who you are. Freeside is a pretty chill environment, but a lot of members come to work on projects with minimal interruptions. Some members might be uncomfortable to allow strangers into Freeside, or are unable or unwilling to bear the responsibility of hosting a guest.

Also, if you arrive at our space and call our VOIP/Voicemail number, you may be disappointed to learn that the number is not currently connected to any physical telephone at the space, and that we rarely check the messages.

Instead, before stopping by randomly, join our public mailing list, or email BOD@freesideatlanta.org and ask ahead to make arrangements to visit.

What kind of services do you offer?
Freeside is not a for-profit organization, so we do not have products or services for sale. Our customer support is terrible, anyway.

Freeside does not provide on-demanding 3D printing, materials or machine time for construction of prototypes, or consulting for patent applications, engineering, or software. We will gladly refer you to businesses that specialize in these matters.

Freeside does not rent storage space or work space to individuals.

What are your hours?
Right now, we don't keep regular hours, but somebody is usually around during the day. Join our public mailing list and ask ahead to make arrangements to visit - our members are more than willing to show off the space and its projects!

Freeside is open 24/7 to members.

What is the best time to stop by and see it for myself?
We have an open house every Second and Fourth Tuesday night around 7p or thereabouts. At our open house, you're welcome to just browse around and see what members are working on. You're free to ask to join the fun! The open house has more of a social feel, but feel free to break away if you find something interesting to work on.

If enough people gather in a cluster, the cluster may be led around.

We also have events and classes (just about) all the time. Check out and join our Meetup group for the schedule and to RSVP.

How can I get more involved?
Freeside is a member-supported nonprofit organization. We're always looking for active new members, donors, and supporters. There are a ton of ways to get started. One way is to bring us something from our Wishlist! Probably the best way is to introduce yourself at the Tuesday Open House listed above.

The only thing that is required for membership is enthusiasm. It is easy to become overwhelmed by the space and all of the projects going on your first time there, but one of our goals is education and we'll teach you whatever you'd like to know. Don't wait for a class on it either - find a subject matter expert (SME) in the area that your interested in and they'll help you get started.

If we don't have a class/event/project/area that you'd like to see, just rally people to get it. If you can keep people excited about something, they'll help you build whatever you're looking for. The more that our members do this, the stronger Freeside becomes and the more resources you'll have at your disposal.

How much are dues?
Our current regular membership rate is $80/mo, which comes with a bunch of benefits. A discount membership rate is $40/mo, and is available to those who qualify (including students) through the Starving Hacker Program.

Other discounts are available, just ask our [mailto:treasurer@freesideatlanta.org Treasurer].

Do you offer day passes or short-term membership?
We do not offer day passes or short-term membership.

The issue with short-term membership is that our community is kept strong by creating a high trust environment. Over time, people that have weak ties to our community and little investment in the continued success of the space may not take care of the basics, like keeping the space clean and putting away tools after working on a project.

If a person is not interested in making a moderate commitment to Freeside membership, then we encourage them to continue to attend our open houses, other public events, or to get involved in one of our community projects, all free of charge.

Are my donations tax-deductible?
You may elect to have a receipt issued for your donation, to claim as tax-deductible. See the donations page for more information about what we accept and how we assess value.

Our Wishlist is a good place to see what we need!

Is Freeside an independent 501(c)3 charity organization?
Yes! Retroactive to MAY-2012, we have approval as an independent 501(c)3 charity organization. Contact the Treasurer for more information or if you have any questions.

How do I get less email from the mailing lists?
We use Google Groups to manage our mailing lists, so you can go to the Google Groups page and manage your email settings there, for the groups you are a part of. If you select the Abridged option then you'll get a daily email. The Digest option sends you an email every 25 emails to the list.

Why 'Freeside'?
Located just south of downtown Atlanta, we are a community of makers, tinkerers, engineers, programmers, artists, teachers, and lunatics. As a community, we have built out our space with tools and equipment for electronics, 3D printing, woodworking, metalworking, art, design, classes, and events. Everything you see in our space was donated or built by members.

The Big Idea
Freeside is a non-profit Organization with a mission of developing innovation and creativity in Atlanta. All of the work in the space is done by volunteers.

We have a lot of people that want to help out at the space, and we also get a lot of requests for changes/enhancements to the space as well as for Classes, Events, Projects, and collaboration with other organizations. In order to organize these efforts, we decided to create teams to divide up the work into specialized areas.

We created 3 main teams to tackle important projects in the space and assigned two Directors to be responsible for each and serve as the major points of contact.

The Activities and Culture (AC) team
This team is dedicated to organizing events in the space, especially classes and projects. This team also organizes the Teacher's Lounge, where teachers and project managers at Freeside can gather to exchange ideas, collaborate, and help to increase the quantity and quality of classes at Freeside.

Points of Contact
If you're interested in getting involved or just picking our brains, email us at [mailto:ac@freesideatlanta.org ac@freesideatlanta.org].

Major projects
*Organizing classes, projects, and build-outs
*Building out the Media Lab, Bio Lab, Auditorium, and Craft Room
*Organizing the Teacher's lounge

You may hear it said on occasion that various strange and fantastic machines have been made at Freeside. The original Money Gun. A Whack-a-Mole game with a certain orange president as it's pernicious targets. A chainsaw with rubber tongues instead of a normal chain meant for high-powered oratory needs. And Kali's flamethrower....

Our former member Kali Styles made a habit of creating well thought out but utterly bonkers devices, and at one point she got an itch to make herself a flamethrower. After doing some research on the topic, it's legality, how others have built them, and their practical possibilities as a fetish toy (unfortunately impractical), she set about taking parts from paintball guns, pressure washers, an army backback, a propane torch, and various other odds and ends fabricated in the shop, and built an astoundingly competent flame thrower. Raul, another member did an amazing job documenting this process, and weaving a fun narrative about it in the video below:

A common adage among hackerspaces is "Don't make us make a rule." With so many various hazards to harm yourself with, we have to trust that at some level you're looking out for your own safety. Rumor has it that at some point a member accidentally set themselves alight while working on some project in the shop, and those who were present saw that it was an obvious and avoidable (and thankfully not too injurious) one man flame-war. To prevent that from happening again, a new rule was needed, and as it seemed a pretty important one it was given space before the existing rules.

RULE 0: DON'T BE ON FIRE!

The Ballad of the Belt Grinder: Ronnie Hinton

One of my favorite tools in all of Freeside is our Belt Grinder. A fairly unassuming tool hanging out in the back of the shop with the cutoff saw and wire-wheel for neighbors, the Belt Grinder has seen many changes over the years, and is a perfect example of great collaboration. It was originally made as a just-barely-working cludge of random bits of steel frame, some rollers turned on the lathe with way-to-small skateboard bearings stuffed in them, and powered by a weedy little electric motor with a rube goldberg contraption of gas shocks, springs, belts, and pulleys to make it all spinny, all screwed to a random hunk of plywood.

Over the years it's slowly changed and improved as members find parts and time to improve it. I brought a large treadmill motor to make it less easy to bog down, Dominic wired up a chunky bridge rectifier and cap to run the new motor, stuffed it all in a gutted PC power supply, and wired it all through an antique variac transformer as a rough speed control. The old homemade pulleys were replaced after the bearings bore all they could bear and their bores banged around until it was barely believable. The gas shocks and other oddball fittings were slowly replaced with less kludgey bits, and today the belt grinder is a very competent and pleasant to use tool that still looks kinda odd, but works great and I'm sure will keep changing with the times as it needs to.

Half the fun of a hackerspace is trying new things you've never done before with minimal research and just seeing how it goes. Once upon a time some members wanted to cast their own wedding bands from silver at the old shop, and to do that they looked up the melting point of silver, realized that handheld propane torches burn about that hot, and gathered their materials for their intended wedding bands.

An interesting fact of metallurgy is that the melting point of a metal isn't the same thing as the temp where it flows smoothly and casts neatly. The couple realized this as they were able to get their silver to somewhat liquify and get maleable and crusty, but not actually liquidy and flowy. No bother, grab some more torches from over there. After quite some time and confusion trying to get their would-be-rings molten enough to cast, multiple torches trained on their small crucible, blazing away at not-quite-hot-enough temps, their attention was drawn elsewhere. The heat from their torches had been rising up and building in the shop's ceiling, where it eventually blew a sprinkler head.

After about an hour of flooding the entire facility, a visit from the fire department, and some very soggy would-be-silversmiths, the shutoff valve was found, and the flood was stopped. It is unknown if they ever reattempted casting their own rings, but new members to Freeside are commonly shown where the sprinkler and water shutoffs are.

Old Freeside had one major advantage over new Freeside when it came to facility buildout: The landlord was very hands-off and didn't seem to be bothered with building permits and the like. By way of that small fact, Old Freeside had a second story with a crafting loft and a rather dubious attic space. The attic area had pipes and cables all over the place, likely TOO MUCH stuff loaded up there at various points, and there was at least one incident where someone put their foot through the ceiling of the room below when they stepped where there was no plywood to support them. OOPS. Someone eventually put a poster over the hole in the ceiling and all was well.

In early to mid 2020 Freeside moved location from it's original 6000 square ft location at The Metropolitan complex near the West End MARTA stop to it's current location. This was far and away the biggest project Freeside and Freesiders have undertaken in basically ever. We were told by our old landlord that they would not make any annual renewal of our lease in mid-2019, rumor had it they were intending to bulldoze and/or redevelop, and it was decided that Freeside needed to seek greener pastures.

We spent several months coming up with a gameplan for finding a new location, calling any number we could find for new facilities, driving around all over town to try and find a place that would be a good fit and crucially not too much more than we were already paying in rent. After what seemed like endless work trying to find a place, we secured the lease on the same day that city-wide COVID-19 restrictions were enacted for Atlanta.

So with a plague on the rise, Freeside's most ardent members scrambled to rent moving trucks, call in favors, and mostly grunt and sweat their asses off breaking down the shop and moving it into our new building.

The Bridgeport mill, Busy Bee lathe, and heavy welding tables were the first things to move, as they were the largest and hardest to do anything with. We accidentally broke the engine crane trying to get the mill onto it's custom heavy-duty pallet, and we had to borrow the ramp from our new neighbors (aka cut it off of their loading dock and drag it around with pickup trucks and chains and straps)to bring the heavy stuff inside since there was no ramp when we got the lease.

To actually move the massive machines our good old friend and former board member Kali called in her banners and a good-ol-boy with a bobcat skid-steer only known as "Cowboy" showed up and loaded the machines from the old shop to the new one. He did a victory wheelie through the new shop in his bobcat when we finally got the machines inside.

Change of Control Codes
The '.nc' files created by CamBam now need to have two control codes changed. These are the commands that turn the laser beam itself on and off.

Change all occurrences of "E1P1" to "M300"

Change all occurrences of "E1P0" to "M301"

New Setup
The previous WindowsXP 32 bit computer with an onboard parallel port has been replaced by a new, smaller, better computer. The toolchain remains the same as before:
your file -> CamBam -> Mach3 -> Laser Cutter

Here is a picture.

Permissions
For general use by members after they have completed an appropriate training course. Treat this equipment as if it were your own cleaning items off of the top of the machine and around its table after usage.

Usage Fee
The laser is a delicate machine with several consumable parts. In order to maintain the laser, Freeside asks for a $5/hour usage fee from members using the laser. These funds will be used to repair the laser, replace tubes, lenses, or other items that wear out, and when there is a surplus, make upgrades.

Laser usage fees should be paid to the Treasurer via payments@freesideatlanta.org with any of methods of payment accepted for dues. Please indicate that the payment is for laser usage for proper accounting.

Restrictions
The laser cutter is a CNC (Computer Numeric Control) machine capable of the following (See the Laser Library for more details):
* Cutting
* paper
* cardboard
* plastics up to 1/2" depending on type
* craft foam
* plywood of certain thicknesses depending on number of layers as well as what type of bonding glue was used
* other stuff I haven't yet tried
* Engraving (vector, but NOT raster)
* cardboard
* plastic
* wood
* glass
* dark stone
* ceramic
* leather

Caution
This laser uses a CO2 gas tube and excites the gas through application of a 25KV voltage across the tube. The tube emits infrared light at a frequency of 1090um. This is invisible to the human eye. Most materials absorb photons with this frequency very readily.

Laser beams do not directly burn or melt material. When absorbing laser light, material moves to the plasma state, bypassing conversion to liquid or gas. However, this plasma is very hot, and material near the plasma can absorb heat and change to liquid or gas, and, if flammable, burn.

Although the beam is invisible, it is very powerful, and can easily damage your skin, clothing, other items, and your eyes.

Do not, under any circumstance, power the laser cutter on unless:
* the E-stop on the machine is on
* the machine controller is attached
* the operating system is completely booted
* Mach3 is running and in the foreground
* the E-stop in Mach3 is engaged

Do not apply the laser to any material containing chlorine. Chlorine is poisonous, and also will damage the electronic components of the laser cutter.

Specifications
In this picture from left to right you can see:
# 24VDC power supply; large aluminum case
# 12VDC power supply; small aluminum case
# In the back are 3 Keling stepper drivers; black aluminum cases with green wiring terminals
# In front of those are 2 120VAC solid state relays (not wired and currently not present in the enclosure); grey plastic cases
# Breakout board
# Power entry
# Hole for 120VAC duplex outlet

In the second picture you can see the high voltage power supply

The gantry is driven by a single dual-shaft stepper motor. This motor has a driveshaft on either side that goes to a bearing mechanism attached to the Y rails. Nearest this bearing mechanism there is a timing belt pulley on the shaft. The belt rides on this pulley and connects to the gantry's carriage to pull it back and forth. All motion in the laser cutter is established via pulling as you can't push a belt.

The lens carriage is driven by a stepper motor with a timing belt attached to the carriage.

The wiring exists for a Z(table) stepper but it's not currently installed. The large timing gear can be turned by hand to adjust the table up/down.

The laser cutter is supported by several pieces of equipment outside of its own enclosure:
From left to right
# The coolant tank stores an amount of water/antifreeze mixture as well as houses the 24V bilge pump to circulate the coolant. Because of the amount of coolant available the temperature increase is not noticeable.
# The air assist pump pumps air into the nozzle attached to the focusing lens on the laser carriage. It's purpose is twofold: keep smoke/debris from out of the line of the laser's beam and off of the optics themselves, and assist the sublimation process by expelling the gasses created
# The fume extractor draws air in from the front of the laser cutter enclosure, across the cutting surface, and out through the back of the enclosure. (Actual equipment subject to change)

The laser beam itself is guided to the cutting nozzle using a "flying optic" system. This means that the laser tube stays in one place and the beam is directed around the enclosure using mirrors. The beam exits the laser tube and hits the first mirror at a ~45 degree angle. It then is reflected onto the gantry's mirror again hitting at ~45 degree angle. It is then reflected onto the carriage mirror at ~45 degree angle and then hits the focusing lens.

Dimensions
The dimensions of the work area are:

X: 453mm

Y: 289mm

Depending on the Z-axis setting, the Z-axis knob might interfere with the carriage. In this case, the rear, left corner of the work area is reduced by a rectangle 13mm in the Y dimension, and 113mm in the X dimension.

The frontmost, leftmost point in the work area is located 140mm from the left wall of the laser cutter cabinet, and 79mm from the front wall.

The grill on which work is set is 605mm wide, 304mm front-to-back, and 23mm thick.
Tips
# Test power level and feedrate on a piece of material like the one you intend to use.
# More isn't always better in regard to power.
# More isn't always better in regard to assist air.
# When watching the laser cut/engrave wood, wear sunglasses, cutting goggles, or a welding helmet. The light coming off of the material is extremely bright.
# Never look directly at the item being cut without at least one material between you and the beam ie: no peeking in the vent holes without protective glasses
# From time to time the gantry gets out of square due to slop in the belts and loosening screws. In order to fix this you need to:
## Loosen one of the setscrews on one of the Y drive pulleys.
## Pull the gantry to the front of the enclosure and using a square like one of these: http://www.harborfreight.com/3-piece-l-square-set-with-levels-98556.html with the large part against the front frame and the blade extending toward the gantry, make sure both sides are equidistant.
## If the belts are loose on one or both sides you can adjust tension using the front idler pulley brackets.
### Loosen the screws and pull the bracket forward.
### Hold the bracket still and re-tighten the screws.
## After the gantry is square and the belts are tight, re-tighten the set screw on the Y drive pulley you loosened earlier.

Quick Reference
* The focusing lens has a 65mm focal point.
* For cutting, the bottom of the carriage should be ~81mm from the surface of the material you intend to cut.
Control Computer Backup
From time to time it is a good idea to back up the control computer. The laser runs on a careful stack of near-obsolete software. We've been using Clonezilla to image the entire hard drive.

There is a boot CD and a USB stick near the laser. The USB stick is large enough for several copies of the hard drive, so leave the oldest one and the last one, if you can. If you restore, you might also want to clone the existing state of the drive for autopsy or in case something goes wrong with the restore process.

About
The Busy Bee lathe is a very mysterious beast. Busy Bee appears to be a Canadian company that imports Taiwanese made tools, similar to Grizzly. Unfortunately it's not well supported, and repair parts and documentation for it are fairly hard to come by. It was originally a single phase 220v machine, but has been converted to 3 phase VFD control with electric braking. While it originally had a lube system, Lore has it that it plugged full of shmoo and stopped working, and no one ever fixed it because it was so seldom needed. Who knows?
The lathe runs on a single phase 240v to 3 phase 240v Variable Frequency Drive mounted to the wall behind it. This allows the lathe speed to be adjusted on the fly by a dial on it's control panel. There are emergency stops wired to the stop button, E-stop button, and brake pedal. It would be real real nice if someone were to copy down the programming settings in the VFD so that if it ever breaks we don't have a hard time replacing it. :)
This section of the wiki was made before Freeside moved from it's original location to it's new location in 2020. It's preserved on the wiki until it's corrected to reflect our new location and may not be accurate to what our current facility is, but we are editing the wiki to bring it in closer line with reality. = About =
A table saw is a woodworking tool consisting of a circular saw blade, mounted on an arbor, that is driven by an electric motor (either directly, by belt, or by gears). The blade protrudes through the surface of a table, which provides support for the material, usually wood, being cut.
Owner(s)
* Freeside

Hackability
Do Not Hack. Alert BoD or president if the saw is damaged or in a dangerous state. Repairs and modification require permission.

Permissions
For general use by members after they have completed an appropriate training course. Treat this equipment as if it were your own cleaning items off of the top of the machine and around its table after usage.

Restrictions
Do not use the table saw to cut anything harder than wood or plastics. No aluminum, no steel, no matter how thin or soft.<br />

Caution
Things a user should know prior to using the equipment:<br />

Tips for using the table saw - http://www.woodcraft.com/Articles/Articles.aspx?articleid=317

Basic Instructions
1: Make sure dust collection tube inside saw is connected.<br />
2: Set blade height as needed.<br />
3: Adjust ripping fence use cutting sled.<br />
4: Power on saw. Ensure dust collector is powered on.<br />
5: Cut wood/plastic with saw keeping the material held tightly to the fence/sled. Use a push stick to avoid getting hands anywhere near the moving blade.<br />
6: Once done, clean up any mess, dust, or offcuts.<br />
7: Lower the blade below the table. Place ripping fence over blade to indicate saw is not in use.<br />

Tips
* Holding material flush with the table and squarely against the fence/ sled for straight clean safe cuts.
* If the suction sucks and sucking, empty the plastic bag and shake out the cloth bag. Make sure all the hoses are connected and not clogged.

Maintenance History
11/14/2021 (Ronnie/Dominic)<br />
(Primary issue was difficulty raising and lowering height and broken dust collector)<br />
1: Replaced the screw shafts for the blade height and angle adjustments.<br />
2: Replaced one hand wheel that was broken where it holds onto the spring pin on the shaft.<br />
3: Pulled the motor, belt, dust guards, dust tube, and basically anything that can be unbolted from the insides of the saw apart, vacuumed and wiped out any wood flour we could reach, lubed anything that could be with graphite spray.<br />
4: Replaced the spring pins on both shafts.<br />
5: Modified the repaired handwheel to allow it to properly lock (ground the notch in it deeper).<br />
6: Built a new dust collection automated power-on box. Wired it up to the saw and mounted it under the cabinet. It's a contactor relay that turns on power to the dust collector when the saw is on.<br />
7: Cleaned up, modified, and rebuilt the dust collector with the somewhat smaller one that used to be used for fume extraction at old freeside on the laser cutter.<br />
<br />
From here on, it should be part of buildout day to check that the insides of the saw are cleaned, the dust tube is in place, and that the parts of the blade height adjustment are lubed with graphite spray. This should keep it from getting all bound up and hard to adjust in the future.
