So you want to be a member of Freeside Atlanta, eh? Awesome!

Feel free to drop in to our [[Open House| open house meetings]] every Second and Fourth Tuesdays at 7:30p (See Meetup.com calendar to confirm the schedule) to meet some folks and see what we've got going on. If you like what you see, and there's a project or class you're interested in, then start showing up to the project meetings or register for classes.

We are a friendly group and welcome newcomers. However, we do want to get to know you first. Here is the process for becoming a new member:

* Request a member to be your '''mentor'''. A '''mentor''' is a member that will introduce you to all things Freeside: where things are, how things work, our policies and rules, and help answer your questions. The easiest way to get a mentor is to come to one of our public events and locate a member with similar interests.

* Submit your '''introduction''' to your mentor. The '''introduction''' is made up of your answers to a few questions that tells us about yourself, your projects, and interests. We then post your introduction to our member's mailing list, which helps connect you to more members. Include a few '''photos''' of yourself (preferably at least 1 at Freeside) and some of your past and current projects. Some of our members are better with faces than names, and everyone likes to see what you've been working on!

* You'll then be sent a '''welcome packet''' by the [[Officers| Secretary]] about how to get started with your new Freeside membership! Your '''welcome packet''' includes an overview of member benefits and rights, links to our policies, and instructions for activating your 24/7 access card.

* Sign the waiver! Remember, the only limit is yourself!

* [[IT]] will set you up with your key card, which gives you 24/7 access to the space.

Freeside members pay one of two dues amounts for their membership - If you meet the program requirements (typically, being a student or unemployed), you pay the [[Policy_StarvingHackerProgram| Starving Hacker Program]] rate of $40 per month. Otherwise, Freeside membership is $80 per month.

$80 per month is pretty close to what you would have to save over two years to get your own Makerbot Replicator 2 or Lulzbot Taz 3D printer. For your Freeside dues, you get access to several 3D printers, a community of people to work with on them, as well as access to a laser cutter, wood shop, machine shop, electronics lab, HAM radio shack, craft room, media lab, auditorium, classroom, and more!

Anywhoozle, you don't have to be a member to take classes, hang out at our events, and get involved. Come out for that and see if building, growing, and developing this space and community is something that you're interested in!

Donations

Retroactive to MAY-2012, Freeside is an independent 501(c)3 non-profit. Approved donations are tax-deductible - please refer to our [[Policy_Donations|donations policy]] to understand how we process and accept donations. Please contact [mailto:donations@freesideatlanta.org donations@freesideatlanta.org] for more details, and to obtain a receipt.

Anyone can contribute time and energy towards Freeside and its projects, but such contributions cannot be claimed as donations for tax purposes.

Membership dues are not tax-deductible.

== Equipment, Materials, and Goods ==

The next best way to help us out is by helping us procure items on our [[Wishlist]], especially if you're not sure what to get us.

Certain equipment or materials are never accepted as donations in any circumstances, such that they may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive. Some restricted items are listed below.

In general and notwithstanding forbidden materials, small value donations (under $250) may be donated with simple notification to the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org Safety and Risk] (SR) team, and claims and issuance of a receipt are at the sole discretion of the donor.

Donors with large value donations (over $250) must contact the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team] for approval. A receipt will be issued to the donor. If the donor wishes to remain anonymous, the donation record will be changed to make the donor anonymous, after issuance of the receipt.

If a receipt is issued for the donor, the fair market value shall be the average of a search for a minimum of three similar items, and the search shall be kept on record and noted on the receipt issued. For most donations, this method or similar valuation should suffice. For larger value donations (over $1000) and where it may be difficult to locate comparables, a signed affidavit of an appraiser must be presented in lieu of fair market value search, and be kept on record.

Separately, the donation of large equipment or materials (in terms of dimensions, volume) where placement is a concern and may interfere with Freeside operations or projects requires the pre-approval of the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team].

Certain equipment or materials must always be pre-approved by the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team], such that these items may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive.

If a member drops off or facilitates a visitor to drop off unapproved equipment or materials, the member shall be tasked with its removal from the space, and may be subject to removal costs or fines at the discretion of the SR team.

Kraken Rebuild Details

This page details the zero dollar rebuild of [[The Kraken]] to convert it into a Prusa i3 2020 aluminum frame reworking.

The original build of The Kraken suffered from design problems that caused the entire frame to torque and move out of square, which severely limited the printing speed and quality. The Prusa i3 is a well tested design and could be built using parts salvaged from the original Kraken.

== Prusa i3 "Wilson" ==

Because the original Kraken was built using 2020 aluminum extrusion, the new machine would be built into a slight reworking of the "Wilson" 2020 Prusa i3 design. The Kraken's threaded rod are 8mm whereas the Wilson uses 5mm, so parts were slightly modified to accommodate the larger rod and nuts.

This was purchased before the rebuild, as the old hot end suffered from several failures. The new hot end also allows us to print in other materials besides PLA.

The original frame was printed in PLA, which is not ideal for structural uses. We bought ABS to print parts for the Prusa i3 to keep with the color scheme of the original machine.

Inductive sensor to replace the Z endstop, which allows the printer to use the auto bed tramming in Marlin.

Aluminum plate to replace the borosilicate bed. An aluminum bed is necessary for the inductive sensor, as well as providing a more evenly heated surface. PEI (Polyetherimide) provides a superior printing surface over bare glass, Kapton tape, gluestick, or hairspray. The high temp 3M adhesive is used to attach the PEI to the aluminum print bed.

* Assorted M3 and M5 bolts, washers, T-nuts, etc.

Vitamins were bought to supplement the ones removed from the original machine, in case more were needed during the rebuild.

Printed parts finished. The majority of the frame was rebuilt, but a few 3D printed parts need to be remade and a few odd vitamins need to be sourced.

A few new parts have been printed. The Budaschnozzle did not fit the standard extruder so a new one was made. The frame was also disassembled so that steel corner brackets could be installed to greatly increase the rigidity of the frame. The wiring was wrapped in new cable management wrap and most of the electronics were ran to the board. A new aluminum Y carriage was ordered to replace the original acrylic bed.

A sturdier aluminum Y carriage was bought and installed to replace the old acrylic carriage. This will help produce parts with less warping due to the less dimensionally stable acrylic.

In 2012, Redbeard taught a series of 3D printing classes/meetups and used the proceeds to donate all the material and hardware to Freeside. The printer was assembled and commissioned by Freeside members. In 2014, Freeside members designed and built a new printing platform that can be easily leveled, and built a new extruder assembly, drastically increasing the quality of prints the Kraken is able to produce.
