How do I join Freeside?
So you want to be a member of Freeside Atlanta, eh? Awesome!

Feel free to drop in to our open house meetings every Second and Fourth Tuesdays at 7:30p (See Meetup.com calendar to confirm the schedule) to meet some folks and see what we've got going on. If you like what you see, and there's a project or class you're interested in, then start showing up to the project meetings or register for classes.

We are a friendly group and welcome newcomers. However, we do want to get to know you first. Here is the process for becoming a new member:

* Request a member to be your mentor. A mentor is a member that will introduce you to all things Freeside: where things are, how things work, our policies and rules, and help answer your questions. The easiest way to get a mentor is to come to one of our public events and locate a member with similar interests.

* Submit your introduction to your mentor. The introduction is made up of your answers to a few questions that tells us about yourself, your projects, and interests. We then post your introduction to our member's mailing list, which helps connect you to more members. Include a few photos of yourself (preferably at least 1 at Freeside) and some of your past and current projects. Some of our members are better with faces than names, and everyone likes to see what you've been working on!

* You'll then be sent a welcome packet by the Secretary about how to get started with your new Freeside membership! Your welcome packet includes an overview of member benefits and rights, links to our policies, and instructions for activating your 24/7 access card.

You will get all of the cool stuff that comes with being a member - check out the Benefits!

Quick re-cap: get a mentor, email in your introduction, and get your welcome packet!

Introduction Questions
Send these questions to your mentor after you find them and decide to join.

<p>1. What do you think you can offer the space? (Skills, personality, a
nice smile, etc.)</p>
<p>2. What do you think the space can offer you? (New talent, social
networking, space to work, etc.) </p>
<p>3. What are some current project you are working on/want to work on?
(If you have past projects you're proud of, now's the time to boast
too)</p>
<p>5. How did you find/get interested in the space? </p>
<p>6.What classes would you be interested in seeing at the space? What
might you be willing to teach? </p>
<p>7. What does the term 'hackerspace' mean to you?</p>

What happens after I join?
After you join, you'll be sent a welcome packet via email by the Secretary letting you know you has new membership. After that:

* Proceed to pay your dues, or get with the Treasurer to set up your first payment.
* Sign the waiver! Remember, the only limit is yourself!
* Familiarize yourself with our Policies.
* IT will set you up with your key card, which gives you 24/7 access to the space.

How much is membership?
Freeside members pay one of two dues amounts for their membership - If you meet the program requirements (typically, being a student or unemployed), you pay the Starving Hacker Program rate of $40 per month. Otherwise, Freeside membership is $80 per month.

$80 per month is pretty close to what you would have to save over two years to get your own Makerbot Replicator 2 or Lulzbot Taz 3D printer. For your Freeside dues, you get access to several 3D printers, a community of people to work with on them, as well as access to a laser cutter, wood shop, machine shop, electronics lab, HAM radio shack, craft room, media lab, auditorium, classroom, and more!

Anywhoozle, you don't have to be a member to take classes, hang out at our events, and get involved. Come out for that and see if building, growing, and developing this space and community is something that you're interested in!

We're always looking for new opportunities to facilitate projects/education in the space. New equipment can help us do that, so we decided to make a wishlist of some of the things that we need for the space.

If you have any items you would like to donate to our space, please contact [mailto:donations@freesideatlanta.org donations@freesideatlanta.org] with details to arrange the donation drop off.

Volunteer Opportunities
* Electrical wiring: running new outlets, and...other activities... (certification required)
* Woodworking, construction: help with shelf/hutch building for electronics, help with member storage build-out
* Mural Art: artists, pick a spot on the wall and make it yours! We also want input on designing logos for each of our zones
* Classes: Teaching at Freeside raises money for the space, helps educate our community, and can put a little extra money in your pocket. You don't have to be a member or an expert to teach a class, you just have to have some basic skills and a plan to share them.
* Projects: Volunteering your skills on projects (and Build-Outs) is a great way to meet people and help out. Check out our Meetup account for upcoming opportunities to jump on in.

Space Improvement Projects
* Expand the security/access control system.
* Fix or trade in the kiln and create an area for it.
* Improve the auditorium lighting and seating.
* Add more documentation for the Equipment and teach more basics Classes for it.
* Install drop ceiling for the classroom.
Consumables
* ABS: Our 3D printers need more spools in a variety of colors; we are good on white ABS!
* Paint (dark, black, matte): for shrouding the stage in the darkness
* Paint (brighter colors especially, not black/grey/white): we are painting an internet meme explosion mural in the front bathroom, and Carrie needs more paint
* Printer ink for the HP L7680
* Audio/lighting/DJ equipment
* Interesting Human Interface Devices
* Arduinos, other automation controllers or kits
* Raspberry Pis: for use with the access control project, or with the informational kiosks like we have in the welcome zone
* 4+ port NIC card for rack system, or full system: we are trying to build a router to create subnets, see Alan or any IT staff person for details
* Mounts for rack systems: stacking the pizza boxen on top of each other just won’t do
* Larger LCD monitors, flat screen TVs: we want to put up informational kiosk displays around the space
* Breadboards: some members have asked and are unclear if some “projects” could be reclaimed or if there are extra breadboards to go around
* Folding chairs: for when we host large talks or events
* Door and ceiling: for the classroom, to cut down on the noise
* Door/Steel/Mesh: for the server room door, for peace of mind
* Help with getting the existing phone system up and running, for being able to dial other phones in the space, and linking that to VOIP
* Working UPS's for various workstations

Storage
* Member storage bins: We are getting new members! Let’s have a few bins at the ready to get them on-board
Please contact [mailto:donations@freesideatlanta.org donations@freesideatlanta.org] for more details, and to obtain a receipt.
Anyone can contribute time and energy towards Freeside and its projects, but such contributions cannot be claimed as donations for tax purposes.
Membership dues are not tax-deductible.
Equipment, Materials, and Goods
The next best way to help us out is by helping us procure items on our Wishlist, especially if you're not sure what to get us.

Certain equipment or materials are never accepted as donations in any circumstances, such that they may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive. Some restricted items are listed below.

In general and notwithstanding forbidden materials, small value donations (under $250) may be donated with simple notification to the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org Safety and Risk] (SR) team, and claims and issuance of a receipt are at the sole discretion of the donor.

Donors with large value donations (over $250) must contact the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team] for approval. A receipt will be issued to the donor. If the donor wishes to remain anonymous, the donation record will be changed to make the donor anonymous, after issuance of the receipt.

If a receipt is issued for the donor, the fair market value shall be the average of a search for a minimum of three similar items, and the search shall be kept on record and noted on the receipt issued. For most donations, this method or similar valuation should suffice. For larger value donations (over $1000) and where it may be difficult to locate comparables, a signed affidavit of an appraiser must be presented in lieu of fair market value search, and be kept on record.

Separately, the donation of large equipment or materials (in terms of dimensions, volume) where placement is a concern and may interfere with Freeside operations or projects requires the pre-approval of the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team].

Certain equipment or materials must always be pre-approved by the [mailto:sr@freesideatlanta.org SR team], such that these items may be explicitly communicated to all Freeside members and visitors. This list will be maintained by Freeside operations, and is not considered to be exclusive.

If a member drops off or facilitates a visitor to drop off unapproved equipment or materials, the member shall be tasked with its removal from the space, and may be subject to removal costs or fines at the discretion of the SR team.

Restricted Items
Forbidden Items
* Stand-alone CRT displays are strictly forbidden, such as TVs and non-LCD computer monitors.
* Animal carcasses are strictly forbidden, even if hidden in sealed buckets. Professionally rendered taxidermy or taxiderpy, treated hides, antlers, bones, and other non-decomposing by-products are exempt from this restriction.

Approval Required
While you may be allowed to bring some of these items to Freeside, approval is required to donate to, or leave the following at Freeside:
* Gasoline
Freeside Atlanta (est. 2009) is a 501(c)(3) non-profit work space built entirely by volunteers.

Located just south of downtown Atlanta, we are a community of makers, tinkerers, engineers, programmers, artists, teachers, and lunatics. As a community, we have built out our space with tools and equipment for electronics, 3D printing, woodworking, metalworking, art, design, classes, and events. Everything you see in our space was donated or built by members.

Our members are engaged in amazing projects and love to share knowledge. We also develop and work with open source and free technology wherever possible, and try to release our creations under variants of the Creative Commons license.

You don't have to be a Freeside member to come to our events or take our classes. We encourage you to come out to the Tuesday night Open House that we have every second and fourth Tuesday at 7:30 PM, or to any of the other public classes or events that we have on Meetup.
Kraken Rebuild Details

Msleeper:

__NOTOC__

This page details the zero dollar rebuild of The Kraken to convert it into a Prusa i3 2020 aluminum frame reworking.

The original build of The Kraken suffered from design problems that caused the entire frame to torque and move out of square, which severely limited the printing speed and quality. The Prusa i3 is a well tested design and could be built using parts salvaged from the original Kraken.

Prusa i3 "Wilson"
Because the original Kraken was built using 2020 aluminum extrusion, the new machine would be built into a slight reworking of the "Wilson" 2020 Prusa i3 design. The Kraken's threaded rod are 8mm whereas the Wilson uses 5mm, so parts were slightly modified to accommodate the larger rod and nuts.

* Wilson 2020 Prusa i3 on Thingiverse

Purchased Materials
* Budaschnozzle 2.0c (replacement for original J-head hot end)

This was purchased before the rebuild, as the old hot end suffered from several failures. The new hot end also allows us to print in other materials besides PLA.

* JET Skyblue ABS filament

The original frame was printed in PLA, which is not ideal for structural uses. We bought ABS to print parts for the Prusa i3 to keep with the color scheme of the original machine.

* LJ18A3-8-Z/BX 8mm Inductive sensor

Inductive sensor to replace the Z endstop, which allows the printer to use the auto bed tramming in Marlin.

* 1/8" Aluminum Sheet Plate 8" x 8"

* 0.03" PEI sheet

* 3M 468MP adhesive sheet

Aluminum plate to replace the borosilicate bed. An aluminum bed is necessary for the inductive sensor, as well as providing a more evenly heated surface. PEI (Polyetherimide) provides a superior printing surface over bare glass, Kapton tape, gluestick, or hairspray. The high temp 3M adhesive is used to attach the PEI to the aluminum print bed.

* Assorted M3 and M5 bolts, washers, T-nuts, etc.

Vitamins were bought to supplement the ones removed from the original machine, in case more were needed during the rebuild.

Build Log
NOV-28

The original Kraken was disassembled to bare components. The 2020 sections were cut to length for the Wilson. ABS was purchased to print the frame components. The Z-axis parts were modified to accommodate the larger threaded rod and nuts.

NOV-30

The Budaschnozzle hot end was disassembled and cleaned of old filaments. ABS for the frame was delivered. Vitamins were collected and sorted to speed up the assembly later in the build.

DEC-5

Parts for the new chassis beginning to be printed.

DEC-12

Printed parts finished. The majority of the frame was rebuilt, but a few 3D printed parts need to be remade and a few odd vitamins need to be sourced.

JAN-3

A few new parts have been printed. The Budaschnozzle did not fit the standard extruder so a new one was made. The frame was also disassembled so that steel corner brackets could be installed to greatly increase the rigidity of the frame. The wiring was wrapped in new cable management wrap and most of the electronics were ran to the board. A new aluminum Y carriage was ordered to replace the original acrylic bed.

JAN-18

A sturdier aluminum Y carriage was bought and installed to replace the old acrylic carriage. This will help produce parts with less warping due to the less dimensionally stable acrylic.

JAN-20

New inductive Z probes were bought to replace the standard Z axis endstop, as well as an 8" x 8" sheet of 1/4" aluminum and a PEI sheet with adhesive. The inductive sensor and aluminum bed well allow The Kraken to use the auto bed tramming in Marlin, and the PEI provides a superior print surface for nearly all materials over borosilicate, Kapton, gluestick, and hairspray.

JAN-26

The Y carriage belt and heated bed were installed. The RAMPS board is missing it's positive voltage pins for the end stops, so it will need to be modified to add those in order for the Z probe to function.

FEB-1

RAMPS board was modified by Wayne to include the +V pins for the endstops. The board was reinstalled and everything was wired up.

FEB-9

The Kraken lives! Firmware loaded and the printer was configured in Repetier Host. It still needs fine tuning but The Kraken has been unleashed.

* Log in with your credentials to the attached members-only terminal.
* Use the Elmer's Disappearing Purple glue stick to apply a thin layer of glue where your print will be. If there is already residue from past glue then you may not need to apply more. If you are having issues with print adhesion, remove the glass and wash it with warm water, and try again with the glue.
* The only tweaks you should need to make for your prints are layer thickness and infill style/density related.
* Please do not change the bed level or limit switches.
* Turn off machine when done.
* How to load and unload filament (optional, but you'll be stuck with the loaded plastic type and color)

Advanced Operational Knowledge
There are some more advanced tasks that not everyone needs to know to
print, but needs to know to troubleshoot:

* How to level a bed
* How to replace the covering on a bed
* How to tighten belts, fix misaligned axises, replace worn out parts, etc.

Slic3r Preconfigured Profiles
There are several Print and Filament profiles that have been preconfigured for Slic3r. Use these before creating or modifying your own.

Print Profiles
The preconfigured print profiles will give you a good starting point for adjusting print quality. If you create a new profile, be sure you name it descriptively and include the name of the printer in the profile. The LulzBot prints best with layer heights between 0.3mm and 0.5mm. Lower layer heights will cause severe print issues!

* LulzBot-Default: Ideal configuration settings for print height, speed, and infill. Supports are disabled by default.
* LulzBot-Mechanical: Ideal for parts which will have mechanical use, IE Bowden extruder gears. This profile prints with more perimeters, more top and bottom layers, high honeycomb infill for strength. Expect long print jobs.
* LulzBot-Speedtest: Testing configuration for tuning printer speeds. Not guaranteed to work. Use at your own risk.
* LulzBot-Factory: Slic3r configuration provided by LulzBot.

Filament Profiles
There should be profiles configured for filament colors. Due to additives to the ABS, different colors of filament will work best at slightly different temperatures. ABS will print best between 205C and 235C, and the heated bed between 100C and 110C. If you are printing with a new color be sure you save a new profile for the name of the color.

* LulzBot-ABS-White: 235C extruder, 105C bed, 50% fan
* LulzBot-ABS-Black: 215C extruder, 105C bed, 40% fan
* LulzBot-ABS-Purple: ?C extruder, ?C bed, 40% fan
About
Freeside member Redbeard designed this custom build RepRap machine. In 2012, Redbeard taught a series of 3D printing classes/meetups and used the proceeds to donate all the material and hardware to Freeside. The printer was assembled and commissioned by Freeside members. In 2014, Freeside members designed and built a new printing platform that can be easily leveled, and built a new extruder assembly, drastically increasing the quality of prints the Kraken is able to produce.

In late 2015, The Kraken was rebuilt into a "Wilson" RepRap design by Michelle. The printer was upgraded with an auto leveling sensor. In February 2016, The Kraken was back in action and printing again. Info about the rebuild can be found here: Kraken Rebuild Details

* Log in with your credentials to the attached members-only terminal.
* <strike>Check that the print-bed is square and centered on the platform.</strike> You should not need to re-level the bed unless your print suffers from noticeable deleveling. The printer has an auto bed tramming feature so the bed does not need to be leveled unless it becomes significantly out of level.
* Use a clean paper towel to clean printer's PEI surface with acetone. There should be a small labeled bottle nearby the printer.
* The only tweaks you should need to make for your prints are layer thickness and infill style/density related.
* Please do not change the bed level or limit switches.
TODO: specify all the restrictions

* Use only with members-only terminal connected to The Kraken
* Use with 3mm ABS, PLA, and HIPS filament only

About
Freeside member Redbeard designed this custom build RepRap machine.

Basic Instructions
TODO: complete instructions on use

Basic Operational Knowledge
* How to home
* How to slice and send a job to it
* How to abort a failed job
* How to properly remove a print once it has completed
* How to load and unload filament (optional, but you'll be stuck with the loaded plastic type and color)

Advanced Operational Knowledge
There are some more advanced tasks that not everyone needs to know to print, but needs to know to troubleshoot:

* How the auto bed tramming feature works
* How to tighten belts, fix misaligned axises, replace worn out parts, etc.

Slic3r Preconfigured Profiles
There are several Print and Filament profiles that have been preconfigured for Slic3r. Use these before creating or modifying your own.

Print Profiles
The preconfigured print profiles will give you a good starting point for adjusting print quality. If you create a new profile, be sure you name it descriptively and include the name of the printer in the profile.

* Kraken-Default: Ideal configuration settings for print height, speed, and infill. Supports are disabled by default.
* Kraken-Speedtest: Testing configuration for tuning printer speeds. Not guaranteed to work. Use at your own risk.

Filament Profiles
There should be profiles configured for filament colors. Different colors of filament will work best at slightly different temperatures. If you are printing with a new color be sure you save a new profile for the name of the color.

* Kraken-PLA-TransGreen: 205C extruder, 60C bed
* Kraken-PLA-DarkGreen: 215C extruder, 65C bed

Come check the place out and see if this is a community that you'd be interested in joining!

__NOTOC__

Freeside Atlanta (est. 2009) is a 501(c)3 non-profit work space built entirely by volunteers. We are a community of makers, tinkerers, engineers, programmers, artists, teachers, and lunatics.

Come check the place out and see if this is a community that you'd be interested in joining!
