A common adage among hackerspaces is "Don't make us make a rule." With so many various hazards to harm yourself with, we have to trust that at some level you're looking out for your own safety. Rumor has it that at some point a member accidentally set themselves alight while working on some project in the shop, and those who were present saw that it was an obvious and avoidable (and thankfully not too injurious) one man flame-war. To prevent that from happening again, a new rule was needed, and as it seemed a pretty important one it was given space before the existing rules.

RULE 0: DON'T BE ON FIRE!

Over the years Rule 0 has been violated a time or two, but who knows how many lives have been saved by it?
